Refractory

Smoldering is the professional sector that installs and repairs chimney ducts and carries out the work contributing to the evacuation of smoke from the combustion. Workers in this sector are called fumistes, because their role was to prevent chimneys from smoking. This activity includes:
Construction of boiler bases, insulation of pipes, installation of faience, ceramic and refractory tiles, and minor masonry work.
In an industrial environment where the trade is appointed as an industrial thermal engineer: the construction, demolition and repair of industrial furnaces in cement, glass, petrochemical, heat treatment, iron and steel industry.
This occupation is exposed to specific health risks (silicosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma) related respectively to the presence of crystalline silica or asbestos in refractory and insulating products and carcinogens in combustion soot. Minimal protective equipment: suitable masks (in particular air-supplied masks when working in confined spaces), gloves and appropriate clothing.
